Are skilled trades jobs in demand in Canada?

Canada's government treats trades as a priority. Trades are one of the Express Entry categories for 2026. British Columbia's provincial program also lists certified trades in its "Build" priority group.

What is the Federal Skilled Trades Program?

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is one of three programs inside Express Entry. Express Entry is Canada's online system for skilled workers who want permanent residence. You make a profile, get a points score, and wait to be invited to apply.

Here are the main rules as of September 2026:

The Canadian Language Benchmark is Canada's scale for language ability. CLB 5 is basic everyday English or French, so you don't need perfect grammar.

Eligible trades fall into certain job groups, such as industrial, electrical and construction trades, maintenance and equipment operation, and some supervisor roles. Your job must match its National Occupational Classification (NOC) code, Canada's official list of job types. Check the code against your daily duties, not just your job title.

How do Express Entry trade category draws work?

In a category draw, IRCC invites people with experience in listed jobs. These draws can have a lower cut-off score than general draws, but that isn't guaranteed.

As of September 2026, the trades list includes:

• Welders, machinists and sheet metal workers
• Electricians and industrial electricians
• Plumbers, gas fitters, carpenters and bricklayers
• Heavy-duty equipment mechanics and heating, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics
• Construction millwrights, industrial mechanics, roofers and painters

To qualify, you need at least 12 months of full-time work in one listed job within the past 3 years. IRCC's data showed one trades draw in 2026 up to mid-September. On April 2, 2026, it invited 3,000 people, and the lowest score invited was 477.

What is Red Seal certification?

In Canada, provinces and territories certify tradespeople, not the federal government. Each one issues its own trade certificate, often called a certificate of qualification.

Red Seal is a national endorsement added to that certificate. It shows you have the skills to work in your trade anywhere in Canada. To get it, you pass the Red Seal exam. The program covers more than 60 trades, from electrician and carpenter to cook and automotive service technician.

If you trained abroad, you usually start with your province's assessment. In Ontario, for example, Skilled Trades Ontario runs a Trade Equivalency Assessment. It checks whether your experience matches an Ontario apprenticeship. If you pass, you can write the certifying exam. As of September 2026, the assessment costs $235 plus HST.

Do you need a job offer for a trades job in Canada?

Not always, but it helps. Here are the main ways a job offer fits in.

For the Federal Skilled Trades Program, a full-time offer for at least a year meets the rule if you don't have a certificate. Since March 25, 2025, a job offer no longer adds Express Entry points.

For provincial programs, many streams need an offer. Ontario's new Ontario Workforce Priority stream, which opened for expressions of interest on August 4, 2026, requires a full-time, permanent job offer.

Add a language test, tool costs, medical exams, police certificates and flights. Plan for your first months of rent before your first paycheck, too.

Say you're a welder in Manila with six years of experience. You'd first confirm your NOC code and take an English test aiming for at least CLB 5. Then you'd apply to Canadian employers while asking a provincial trade authority about assessment. With a job offer or a certificate, you could create an Express Entry profile and watch for trades draws.

Follow these steps in order:

1. Confirm your NOC code and make sure it's in an eligible trades group.
2. Gather proof of experience, such as reference letters showing duties, hours and dates.
3. Take an approved language test. Results must be less than 2 years old.
4. Contact your target province's trade authority about assessment and exams.
5. Apply for jobs with Canadian employers and ask whether they use LMIAs.
6. Create your Express Entry profile once you meet the program rules.
7. Check provincial streams that match your trade or job offer.

Common mistakes tradespeople make

• Using a job title instead of duties. IRCC checks what you actually did.
• Weak reference letters. Letters without hours, dates and duties can sink an application.
• Skipping the certification question. Some trades need a licence before you can legally work.
• Assuming a job offer adds points. It doesn't anymore, though it can still make you eligible.
• Paying an agent for a job. That's illegal for employers, and it's a common scam.
